Compulsive Behaviours like nail biting, skin picking or hair pulling
When you are doing any kind of compulsive behaviour that you’d rather not be doing, there’s going to be a reason for that. Not a reason that you’re consciously aware of though… that’s why it’s not always simple to work out how to stop.
Most of the time our brains are telling our body what to do without us having to think about it, otherwise we’d get nothing done. We’d never learn to drive, walk, or do anything at all if the process didn’t become automatic. These actions all bring us some positive result.
Compulsive behaviours work in the same way. It can be helpful to recognise that whatever actions you are unconsciously doing actually does have a positive intention. Often the intention is to relieve stress, which perhaps it does ‘in the moment’ of acting out, or at least it did at one time. But it’s become an ingrained habit which is now actually the source of stress, so what now?
This is where cognitive hypnotherapy works so much more quickly and effectively than other therapies. Together we’ll get to the root of why the behaviour started, and update your ‘brain software’ on what you’d rather do in those situations.
