What is anxiety?

Anxiety can be crippling.  It can stop you doing the things you’d really like to do with your life. It can stop you sleeping. It might make you blush when you meet new people; it might stop you going out altogether.  It might prevent you from speaking up at work, or presenting your ideas.  It might make you stop going to work at all.  It can keep you away from the relationship you long for.  It can mean you worry about anything and everything. Often it seems to make little or no sense.

The thing is, an ability to feel anxiety is absolutely necessary to our survival.  It’s a natural human emotion, and one that at times serves us really well.  It can keep us from taking unnecessary risks and it can alert us to situations in our environment that we need to pay attention to. We all need to feel anxiety sometimes.

So our goal is not to rid ourselves of anxiety completely, but to understand what the anxiety means. In understanding its purpose we can more easily let go of the unwanted behaviours that are a direct result of that feeling, and that means we can begin to take charge of our lives. And once you realise that it’s in your power to take control in spite of some anxiety, the more you’ll find it begins simply to fade away.
